Scat Dog Update

Diesel has been doing a sterling job and this pilot project has been an outstanding success. It takes approximately 132 field hours for field officers to find a scat (which is used to assess range, diet, hunting habits etc). Diesel is averaging 30 field minutes per scat! Not bad for a "Staffie" from Krugersdorp West.

The project has received a lot of attention from the media and Diesel's training has been featured on/in:

  • BBC Channel 5

  • Bush Radar

  • Kyk Net - Groen

  • All About Dogs

  • SA Stafford Magazine

Diesel has also been featured in a number of promotional events. He is proving to be a very competent worker and promises to be a major asset to the project. We are so proud of the little guy.

Based on Diesel's success another dog was trained in this work. He did very well and made one find in the field but his career was tragically cut short as he was diagnosed with epilepsy. On the plus side two other dogs are currently receiving basic training and we hope to have them join Diesel soon.

We will also shortly start training another dog to find otter scat.
