Working Trials

Working trials comprises a number of elements which work toward the complete working dog.

  • Nosework (Area search & tracking)

  • Obedience (Real life obedience)

  • Agility (Send-aways over obstacles)

  • Manwork (in higher levels)

One of the elements is nosework, which is exactly as it sounds - the dog uses his nose!

The area search exercise involves the dog working a 100m2 area to find small articles that have been placed there.

The handler may only direct their dog from outside the area using verbal cues and hand signals.

The photos show the sequence during an area search. The dog is walked round the area, given his cue and off he goes.

Off he goes and works the area. The handler should make clever use of the ground topography and prevailing winds to assist their dog in picking up the scent.

The dog has found the article and brings it back to his owner. He is heartily praised!

Here another dog works the area with his handler assisting when required.
Here the dog has been sent away over jumps. He is required to assume a position at the end of the obstacles (sit, down or stand) and then recall to his handler.
