Advanced Obedience

Just like with all our formal obedience classes, we train to competition standards. However we never let this compromise our handler's relationships with their dogs - if the dogs and handlers are not enjoying their classes then what's the point!

Description

Mark Deductions

Maximum Marks

Heel on lead

The main purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that the dog is willingly walking in the heel position i.e. the lead is loose.

The dog walks alongside the handler’s left side the heel position. The heelwork will include right, left and about turns at the halt and on the move.

Slow and fast pace will also be used. Halts and turns on the move may be at any pace.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

A ½ mark will be deducted for: Skew sits, slow to respond & out of position

A full mark will be deducted for: Tight lead, non-response, touching of the dog & moving of feet once a position has been assumed.

Heel off lead

The main purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that the dog will maintain his heel position when off lead.

The dog walks alongside the handler’s left side the heel position. The heelwork will include right, left and about turns at the halt and on the move.

A ½ mark will be deducted for: Skew sits, slow to respond & out of position

A full mark will be deducted for: Non-response, touching of the dog & moving of feet once a position has been assumed.

Sendaway

The main purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that the dog can be sent to a predefined marker and lie down smartly on command

The handler removes the lead and leaves the dog in a sit position. In their own time they send the dog to a marker at least 10m away. The handler then downs the dog at a distance.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

A ½ mark will be deducted for: Skew sits, anticipation, slow to respond & out of position

A full mark will be deducted for: Non-response, very crooked sit, no sit, touching of the dog & moving of feet once a position has been assumed.

Recall and finish off lead

The main purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that the dog will stay on command and return promptly and neatly to his handler when so requested.

The handler removes the lead and leaves the dog in a sit position and moves at least 20m from the dog. On command the dog recalls to the handler and sit in front of the handler. On command the dog returns to the heel position.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

A ½ mark will be deducted for: Skew sits, anticipation, slow to respond & out of position

A full mark will be deducted for: Non-response, very crooked sit, no sit, touching of the dog & moving of feet once a position has been assumed.

Retrieve handler’s article off lead

To demonstrate that the dog will fetch on command and return promptly and neatly to his handler.

The handler removes the lead and leaves the dog in a sit position. On command from the steward, the handler throws their article. On command the dog smartly retrieves the article and presents to the handler in a sit position. On command from the steward the handler takes the article. On command the dog returns to the heel position.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

A ½ mark will be deducted for: Skew sits, anticipation, slow to respond & out of position

A full mark will be deducted for: Non-response or slow, very crooked sit, no sit, drop of the article, touching of the dog & moving of feet once a position has been assumed.

Sit Stay off lead

To demonstrate that the dog will obey a sit stay command.

The handler removes the lead and leaves the dog in a sit position and moves at least 20m from the dog. The sit stay is for 1 minute with handler in sight for 75% of the stay and out of sight for 25% of the stay.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

Marks are awarded in proportion to the time spent in the stay position.

Down Stay off lead

To demonstrate that the dog will obey a down stay command.

The handler removes the lead and leaves the dog in a down position and moves at least 20m from the dog. The down stay is for 2 minutes with handler in sight for 75% of the stay and out of sight for 25% of the stay.

Repeated commands will be penalised.

Marks are awarded in proportion to the time spent in the stay position.
